Scene from movie Interstellar that broke me

In interstellar, Cooper (the father) has to travel through a wormhole in hopes of saving humanity. He must find out which planet is best hospitable for the humans who will soon starve to death on Earth.

But, he must leave behind his two younger children. He’s promised that he will be able to see them again but must hurry because time moves faster on the other side of the wormhole. He tells his young daughter, “Maybe by the time I get back, you and I might be the same age. You and me. Imagine that.”

He awakes now in a whole new world of humanity—even museums made of his home that he left behind in honor.

But not in honor of him.

In honor of his daughter. Who received the messages and figured out a way, on her own since her dad failed, to save humanity. Many MANY years ago. She is a true hero. And guess what? She’s still alive for him to see her.

He goes into her hospital room; she is now a very elderly lady. Surrounded by her family, she is on her death bed. Cooper walks up to his daughter, who inspired him to try and be the hero he tried to be. The one he broke his promise to. The one that he spends his “last moments” trying to go back to. And she tells him,

I knew you’d come back.

..How?

…

Because my dad promised me.

And then the viewer completely drowns themselves in their tears.

Every time I speak of Interstellar to people, I bring this scene up first. It’s one of the most emotional scenes I’ve ever seen in my entire life.

The emotion on Cooper’s face when she finally forgives him when he can finally hold his daughter’s hand again and feel like he’s done her proud. The emotion of him feeling like a good father after all of those years and traveling through space. It’s remarkable.

It hits close to home for me as a young parent. He is struggling to work extra hard every second of the day to give my son his best life. To provide him with a life better than mine.

Countless, tireless hours of overtime to provide for him. So that I can come home and see his jolly smile. Knowing that he can be proud of me, even though he’s too young to be able to say it. To see Cooper’s daughter not give up on him and hold on to her hope so firmly it’s an accurate visual of a child’s love for their parent. It was so beautiful to see on screen.
